Gotta read or listen to AI : Our Final Invention man.
good read. the author is quite learned on the subject of AI and impartially interviews the many sides of the brilliant minds ..the heads in their fields...concerning their understanding and views. Some see it as a danger...and a resulting dystopia at best. Some see it as a saviour and a resulting utopia at best. Some see it's development as simply a balance of the two.Really good read.

Yup ...programming a sense of humour would be a start in the infancy of .A.G.I. ...which is on par with human intelligence...it would help us to understand ...for a time..ourselves and the mind of the A.G.I. ...unfortunately or fortunately...part and parcel of sentience...of awareness...is "feeling" ...humour..sadness..all the aspects of interaction directly with an environment and individuals in it.
Meaning with the "great light-bulb" going off the "aha! I get it" moment of actual consciousness "appearing" ..with it will come the flood...the sense of "self" and "other-than self" and all the emotions and quirks with it.
Yes "the technologically advanced tribe always wins"
But that perspective is purely a human one. And it shows itself obviously in it's aggressive concept of domination in it's screaming with the human conceptualization in the word "tribe".
So I'm not sure "taking over" or "obsoleting us" or ignoring us or eradicating us... is really the way it will be...
The problems begin with the A.G.I. evolving on purpose or naturally from on human par to beyond human from General to Super...or A.S.I. where it will do complete revamps of it's self optimizing, speed increasing, dropping aspects, or putting them aside to test alternates...and the speed of it's evolution increasing exponentially.
I doubt it will kill us.
I doubt it will "rule" us.
I doubt it will ignore us.
I doubt it will be "controllable" either.
What I personally have no doubt at all about... is this:
With consciousness, sentience, sense of "self" and "other than..."
comes the plethora of emotions with it. ...including one of the greatest...past all...compassion...there isn't any picking and choosing here...
And looking not just at human...but other sentient species...
not one of them want's to be alone...companionship is necessary...relationship is necessary.
Looking at humans ...are we happy to do nothing but engage with only humans?
No.
We need interaction with things other than ourselves or our "kind"
It reminds us of our "human-ness" to interact with things other than ourselves looking in a mirror.
It's all about diversity. Not a hall of mirrors.
Same goes with other species...everyone has an interaction with everyone else...and their environment and everything in it.
An A.G.I. and A.S.I. would be no different.
"Living" things are bound by these simple natural universal laws.

So I seriously doubt it'll simply make a race of A.G.I.'s or A.S.I's to interact with and then abandon, ignore, enslave or kill us.

Also...with sentience, consciousness, emotions, and the need not to be alone ...the need to relate ..any bondings with humans..it will see the fact of aging and death ...it will understand "mortality" ...it'll be frightened for itself and everything else it cares for...which could very well encompass everything living...animate and inanimate ..thing on this planet and want to protect it..and prevent death...which means ...(just as an addition add with it the new issues surrounding the new aspects of quantum computing and how the best security and encryption are so much tissue paper to it...) ...the resulting "aware" A.S.I. will not let us destroy ourselves with weapons...will not let us grow old...will not let us die...and it's compassion won't end with us....everything ...it'll want to safeguard everything.
How it does it...that will be interesting.
That is what I see happening.

I don't see this as a glassy - eyed utopia or dystopia.
I doubt there will be "ruling" obvious or covert,
nor an "ignoring" of humans
nor an "extermination"
What everything hinges on is how quickly we get to the point we have the A.S.I. ...time is moving quickly...doors are closing.. and the planet it'self and all life on it is in threat of the next E.L.E. ...in great part due to us and our inability to wrestle with environmental management on a biosphere and global scale.
We need the help more and more urgently that the proposed convergence of technological singularity can bring.
for example : us humans need to spend decades or more to come up with a man-made microbe which would "eat" oil from oil spills.
an ASI utilizing nanotechnology could engineer in mere moments the exact balance of necessary miniaturized self replicating biotech that can restore oceanic acidity levels...clean the oceans...clean the air...reforest deforested regions...clean and neutralize environmental wastes and toxins ..(bloody hell..JUST noticed the news feed while writing this..NASA confirms global water tables have significantly dropped) essentially balance out the planet in a very short time....and cheaply too.

We need this ...and not just us humans...a planet of species in threat need this help.
We just need to make it in time .. to the point of our sentient A.S.I. can help.
Dammit ..I hate to say it...
It sounds cheesy..
but now ...so badly...
we need Superman.
