Different banks charge different fees. I have seen charges anywhere between £10 and £20 in the past and I have just learned that it could be even higher. I believe the different currencies are a convenient excuse.

Frankly, with extortionate charges everywhere (e.g. a "leave to remain" - a UK equivalent of the probably better known US "green card" - application costs £1500), I seriously question how on earth did they manage to get themselves into the crisis...?
