Which, really, is kind of surprising, considering how often Apple backs losing (and pseudo-proprietary) cabling formats. There was the Apple serial cable, the Apple Desktop Bus, Firewire (later renamed Firewire 400), Firewire 800, and lately they've adopted Thunderbolt (which might have a chance...).
I think Apple prefers to adopt "standards" that are unpopular, simply because they become pseudo-proprietary for them. Once a standard becomes popular, Apple tends to try to phase it out and move on to something else. Apple has kind of surprising by supporting USB on their devices for so long now, but of course they rushed to USB-C as quickly as it came out, so they're still finding ways to try and make life harder for folks using non-Apple devices.
