I think the title of your thread is the thing man...
your n900 serious problem is that you are using it in conjunction with windows 10..
which IS a serious problem
actually...
I'm having a hard time being serious about this serious problem....

just grab deb or buntu cram it on a usb flash drive...
stick it up the arse of that win 10 ..
restart your computer...
boot into linux...
connect your n900...
serious problem solved ...

it won't impact your win 10...
or touch your computer in any way....
and you'll have the convenience of an easier solution whenever you need it.
