Mine was a bit off too. But I just sort of gently worked it into the socket on the tablet now it's fine. I too was a bit leary then figured WTF and gave it another shot and all was cool.

When I looked at the adapter in relation to the socket I could see the "top" where the two edges of the metal come together were not quite even and every so slightly apart. A bit of gentle persistance and all was fine.

If you have another device with the same connector use that device to help "finish" the adapter shaping. Or even some gentle use of a pair of needle nose pliers should do the trick...
