So, I had to deactivate my two factor authentication (because who needs that stuff when you only have dickpics and your Swiss bank account details in your email!) and went full Flintstones style to imap/smtp. Works and solves calendar too.

Soooo... now I'm rocking gmail with the security equivalent of a thong!
I have two factor authentication and use gmail without any problem.
1. Just head over to app passwords section.
2. Generate a password, enter it on your phone when it asks for it, Done.

For those who do not have 2 factor authentication, enable access for less secure apps.
