Steve, very sorry about that but brecklundin is exactly right; there is nothing about the outer shape of the connector that will harm the N800 (it was the solder on the pins that was the original concern as it would actually affect the pins in the connector on the N800), the best thing to do is grab another device (i.e. a USB hub, etc) that has the same mini B connector on it and just work it in a little. I've had everyone one of the adapters plugged into my N800 here before they went out for testing, so they will fit, they just may be a wee bit tight at first.
As far as power management goes, no idea I'll have to do some tests but my bet is that there's very little going on. With a directly powered device (i.e. the LAN adapter, etc no external power) the tablet should not be putting out more power than it can accept from the charger; so with it plugged in the tablet should never "lose"; it might not actually charge, but there shouldn't be a way for it to drain simply because of a USB device. I'd be interested to hear about scenarios that you've encountered this behaviour in though...
