Another thing that irks me is the current fashion, even among the people who should know better, for looking up to
extremophiles
as a blueprint for extraterrestrial life. If there are microbes that can thrive in boiling Yellowstone lakes, under 2 km of freezing Greenland glaciers or embedded inside rocks with no water or obvious source of food, then surely there can be little green men floating in the clouds of Jupiter, frolicking in the liquid methane oceans on Neptune or scurrying along under the scorching, sulfuric acid filled skies of Venus.
Come on, guys. Just because life can exist in extreme environments does not mean it popped up there out of the blue. It was more likely conceived in a more favourable environment and gradually colonized the niches as it slowly got accustomed to conditions further and further away from optimal, until it managed to survive in the extremes.
