We have had serious serious calamities here in the past
If you look at a topo map of Vancouver Island ...
The "weak " point is about 2/3 rds of the way up the island.
If the "Big One" ever hits in California ...
there are two outcomes .
Since the fault lines here are always relieving pressure it won't be so bad...
Still...there is the potential for catastrophic occurrence and the separation of Vancouver Island ...splitting it in two at said "weak" point.
That would be absolute worst possible outcome for Van Isle in that scenario .
Excepting the region it would directly take place in...and the immediate devastation that would occur ...we would still come out of it relatively unscathed ...
No matter what though...
When the Big One hits...
the entire Lower Mainland...of British Columbia ...would disappear due to the fact it is all islands in flood plain that has been covered over with "fill"
...when I say most of the Lower Mainland would "disappear" ...
I meant it...
Once the Big One hits...pretty much everything in the Lower Mainland will disappear due to liquefaction of the ground...
cars people you name it ...will just get swallowed ...
It will be a horror.
Still...I will be fine on Gabriola Island.
As far as Tsunami goes ...
every time there is an alert everyone keeps an eye open here...
IF a Tsunami hits... a great swath of the continental coastline is protected from it by Vancouver Island...in front of it.
If a Tsunami hits it will be the far western coast of Vancouver Island (with a very small population) that will take the brunt of the wave.
There are warning escape routes to higher ground when the alarms sound on the West coast of Van Isle...
So casualties will be few compared to no emergency planning at all.
If a Tsunami hits...it is that same "week" point...2/3rds up the island where it will be hard for the residents...hard for many folks...
there are a lot of people there and along the eastern area just starting about 50 miles up from Nanaimo...and heading inland to Port Alberni ...
That area is part of the islands "weak" point...
It is the part of the island that is the lowest ...
We have had Tsunamis hit Vancouver Island in the past.
It is always bad for that weak point...
the wave comes in from the West side ...and actually makes it across the island to empty in the shores of the East side of the island...
The last one wasn't long ago..
Past Tsunamis have obliterated whole communities off the map...
So yeah...we take natural phenom very seriously here.
yet again ...Gabriola Island and Nanaimo are sheltered from such devastation.
So I have little to worry about ...personally ..
