Actually ...when I think of it...
It is hardly a fair comparison Dave...
Star Trek had ground breaking concepts and such..
Star Wars completely ripped the lid off Sci fi ...
I was young and I remember when it came out...
EVERYONE went to see it...some a dozen times or more...
It was a crazy time...everyone went mad for it...
It really was the dawn of the geeks as we know it...
accepted in popular culture..
If one could hit on any 3 monumental films and say...
"This is when people "thought" and pondered on sciences, and were curious and aimed their careers as a consequence.."
Then "2001: A Space Odyssey" ...
was that moment.
And
"This is when society embraced and went gaga for Sci fi ...and it simply started to become part of our common experience...
Then "Star Wars"...
was that moment.
And lastly if any film could be seen by historians to have had such an impact as to have shaped our futures' course as a technological civilization..
Then "BladeRunner"...is that film.....

So yeah.
Star Wars / Star Trek ...I think...


As far as what we can do to stave off the worst of what is coming...like it or not...
Planting trees lots of them...will help to naturally balance out the emissions we are putting out as a species...
It is cheaper and more effective to clean our air, soak up airborne toxins, soak up co2 and put out air ...
Forests impede many storm based catastrophes by dragging the life out them, Forests retain the cool of the day and more efficiently
The list goes on..
It is just more effective , more practical..more efficient,and works better than building something that will have cost a vast amount in resources, and pollution JUST to build.

Same goes for swamps, marshes, fens, bogs, etc...
For the longest time we considered as a species that they were terrible and unsightly...drained them, paved over them, dumped on them, built on them...
When what we were doing was the WORST thing possible.

If the trees are the lungs of the planet..
Then marshes and swamps and fens are the kidneys and liver...
Purifying and cleaning the water of toxins...

We have been going about changing this place based on what we think works....and only for our own aggrandizement ..or our own convenience...
We STILL have people profiting off the planet and disputing climate change ...since they have a vested interest.
No one wants to sacrifice their economic growth, for the sake of their own futures..and their children ...no one wants to change and adapt to what must be.
Instead, everyone wants bigger cars, cheaper fuel, cheaper bills, cheaper food, hell, 10 billion mobile devices ....more...flood the planet ...and all with a disposable lifetime based on a few years...
OF COURSE we are screwed, and everyone wants it this way.
ALL the while the boomerang effect of these choices comes back around as climate change ...costing more for what we desire...
It is a bad circular trap we are in.

The price of that is coming VERY VERY fast now...and it is compounding interest....
Like a snowball rolled down a mountain...
as it comes towards us at the bottom...
It is growing mammoth in size and proportions ...and is picking up speed as it comes at us...at a phenomenal rate...
It isn't a snowball anymore...
It is an all consuming avalanche ...

Its a bad bad situation we are unlikely to survive...
the longer we continue on this idea of "consumption" as status quo.

I thought a long time ago ...I would never in my lifetime see the beginning of such dramatic change and the fall of our civilization...possibly our species and most others with us as well...

Now ..I see that I will definitely be alive for the beginning of it at the very least.

We COULD actually come out of this...
But the only way that is happening is ...
EVERYONE works together, EVERYONE understands we must start paying the bill we owe...by reducing our waste.
We can feed everyone here, we can provide for everyone here, we have the tech and science, we have the knowledge and ability.
But the wealthy and powerful, the vain and the greedy, the violent and irreconcilable MUST be stopped, to do so.
The unsustainable lifestyles of city dwellers have no place in taking care of the planet.
How exactly do they?
Hit the "Like" button on facebook or twitter for some NGO?
Put a few bucks towards OXFAM in an envelope?
Really....
Many are going to have to ditch their seemingly impregnable concepts of "living" and get real.
