Do you know why it is called that? Apparently the ancient Greeks called Sirius "the dog star". Since it is a summer star, emerging around mid July, they called the season when it is visible "the dog days".

What came as an even greater revelation to me was to realize that the Russian word каникулы ("kanikuly"), meaning "holiday", comes from the same origin (dog = "canis" in Latin).
