Later, in 1996, I went to Ukraine on business and had to drink Советское Игристое (Sovetskoye Igristoye, "Soviet sparkling wine") instead. Same drink, same bottles, same label, only one word difference.

According to this new law, only (certain) Russian sparkling wines can use that label, actual Champagne from Champagne cannot.
They can still put the word "Champagne" in latin letters on their bottles, but in Russian it needs to be sparkling wine.
Wow. I didn't know that. If that isn't trolling, then I don't know what is.
