from application manager I find uboot-pr13 but it fails due to dependence on Kernel which I cannot find either. I need a guide for a more developed idiot. it is many years since I used the N900.

You need the ~~extras testing~~ ssu/mr0 repository enabled because the kernel modules are not available in extras and then it should work with the application manager after a package refresh.

The package is called u-boot-flasher.
