I've found that on some wi-fi spots that require authentication (username and password) or require that you accept their "terms of use", javascript needs to be enabled on the device to allow this interaction. Javascript was not enabled by default on my 770. Once I enabled it, I was able to connect to internet. You are able to see the networks without J-script enabled but you don't get IP address, so of course you can't browse the internet.
