Two comments (V3c):
1) You can DUN even with EVDO active, I do it all the time. Those A-holes at Verizon reboot your phone regularly and when they do, EVDO becomes active. It is better to keep it inactive (unless you have the $$$ or stupidity to actually use it) since it drains the battery faster.
2) Verizon, in many regions, has deactivated the old "qnc" system. What you can do, however, is just DUN into your ISP. Still costs you airtime (except on weekends and evenings), but you get a reliable connection and your email works!
