I can confirm the same behaviour. I also have my own xmpp IM server (same protocol as google talk) and it will drop for a few seconds at random times. I have other idle connections such as VoIP that don't do that. It seems to be xmpp related on my device. If I open a full xmpp client like pidgeon it doesn't drop so it appears to be the builtin xmpp connection that is having trouble.
