Well, while browsing you are mostly waiting for network. Stock 770 felt slow to me in almost everything but 770 booted from MMC with 48MHz mmc speed and swap enabled is good enough. And now you can fit 8GB microSDHC so even space is OK. FPU is still not used much in current system (because most code is compiled to thumb mode which does not get along well with VFP) so it is not such big advantage.

Overall it is true that N800 is faster and still has much room to grow while 770 is already maxed out so we can't expect further miracles. But still I wonder how webkit or newer firefox engine would run on 770, there is some chance it could be good replacement for Opera, current microb in 2007HE is not.
