The 800 does have a transflective screen; it's extremely clear in sunlight and generally one of the best screens I have ever seen. The spec is easily available online and this feature is usually mentioned in reviews, if you need to confirm it.
Hardware that has been released generally will be "behind" hardware that hasn't been released yet. It's the nature of the beast, even before allowing for delayed launches, poor launch usability, vapourware and over-claiming. There definitely are things Nokia could do to spice up successors, but the existing hardware is actually damn good. Improved UI and marketing would be my priority.
