You can check the IT version through Control Panel->About.

Also you could try loading built in media player and playing some audio files. The same thing happened to me a few times where my bluetooth headset was connected but the sound was not redirected. This seemed to help (atleast in my case).

Also from within Application Manager, you could try running "Tools->Refresh Application List" menu. Then check the update section whether skype appears as an update.
