In conclusion, It does work sometimes, but it isn't as straightforward as it might be.
I've used Google Talk - Google Talk for video and it's worked every single time, and you said it worked for you too. Why use Gizmo if Google Talk works?

Google Talk is very very straightforward to set up, you basically just enter the username and password, there are no other settings at all. I can't think how it could be more straightforward.

I think this is wrong. There are a few people on this forum that can do video calls to PCs with the built in software. Using a pure SIP environment.
They've done it with "Internet Call"?

I don't think SIP is the most user-friendly way of doing things though, most people don't even know what SIP means.

There's also no way to set up a SIP account using the built-in software, whereas Google Talk and Jabber DO let you set up a new account in the built-in software.

I'm not talking about Gizmo, that isn't built-in (at least it isn't on the latest firmware). There's a Gizmo icon by default, but that's just a download link like the Skype icon.

The built-in video and voice chat software is Internet Call, which uses Google Talk or Jabber. That comes ready installed, and it's the one newbies are most likely to try and use because of how prominently it's displayed in the second menu, and the way it automatically launches when you open the camera on the N800.
