I repeat: try expanding the memory to a mmc card
I, too, have this ‘Operation Failed’ issue and it is not related to any shortage of internal memory.
Device memory = 71.3MB available.

go root in terminal and fire up apt-get...
This does not produce any out of the ordinary information, just a list of Ign and Hit lines.

I am glad the OP has his problem sorted but if anyone has any other suggestions I would be grateful.
