It was a proof of concept that was written to show the power and speed of creating/coding using edje, it came out around the time of the iPhone launch which explains the similarities.
The consensus was that it operated much better than the thumb currently used in maemo. I think Handful wanted to implement it in Canola 2 but there were issues that came into play that resulted in this not happening.
