We can accuse the maemo guys of a lot of things, but "laziness" isn't one of them.
For once, I wasn't targeting the Maemo crowd alone. It seems quite a lot of Linux "computerette" developers think this is the "right" way to do things. Pepper e.g. went down that road also; luckily, they're now dead (albeit still twitching) and the community is picking up the pieces nicely.
