Unfortunately, they didn't help for an annoying reason: my mobile operator (Orange) messed with the OS and made it impossible to use internet connection sharing. I could reflash the ROM, but it isn't clear to me whether the phone will continue to work on that network.

This is why it's worth paying a little extra for sim-free unlocked devices, you actually get the full device without any restrictions or crippling, and you can change networks or even use several networks at once.

If you can get it unlocked it should work on any network. I've never heard of a European network operator shutting phones out just because they're unlocked.
