So any advice?

Maemo Mapper is an excellent map program with good built-in help and plenty of online tutorials, that interfaces to a number of online map repositories.

I use Google Street as my map repository and the Australian coverage is excellent for city and towns and usually very good for rural areas. I've noticed some missing or limited information for remote rural areas, but nothing problematic.

I have also tested OpenStreet as a source for Maemo Mapper, and it is also good and improving all the time.
