I think it will be much cooler if and when android runs alongside maemo rather than instead of maemo.
I agree. I think the ideal for me would be either:

Maemo with Android Extensions/support
or
Ubuntu Mobile/Moblin with Android Extensions/support

depending upon the specific device being discussed.
