For accessing music and pics outside of the firewall, there's also ssh and sshfs. You can mount network shares on your tablet from anywhere, and the data is encrypted (so no worries about spying while at the Internet cafe).
If you aren't familiar with ssh or how to set it up, then that solution isn't for you. If you are, then look into sshfs. I used the binaries

, but a search should find other options.
Video streaming may be better done with a mediaserver solution that transcodes on the server.
Perhaps
mediautils
is your video streaming cure.
