Storing the satellites in view won't work. The GPS satellites are not in geosynchronous orbits, they're in lower polar orbits, and constantly move from north to south, with westward movement as the earth spins. The satellites in view anywhere on the earth are constantly changing, so the GPS has to know what satellites are in view depending on the location and the date and time. The normal way to figure this out is by downloading data from satellites, but that takes time because the GPS has no idea which satellites are in view. Using AGPS, the receiver can quickly get an almanac and ephemeris data over the cell connection, as well as a very close approximation of its position, and thus know which satellites to use. Most receivers can store the almanac data and know which satellites are in view provided it hasn't been moved since the last time it had a fix, and provided it hasn't been too long, because only so much data is provided in the almanac.
