Have you tried the canola clean up application? Also, to install I would advise disabling all repositories except for:
1. http://repository.maemo.org/ gregale free non-free
2. http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ gregale free non-free

Make sure its just those with gregale. Then, in the application manager, find canola through the "new applications" and install through there, instead of using the canola website link.
