as I understand it in my own limited way, the bandwidth problem with video on the 8x0 is at least partly a bug/design fault, and it would have been too expensive to resolve it since it's in a custom chip.

the bandwidth is sufficient to play a lesser resolution video which can be scaled to full screen. I find that if I transcode a PAL DVD (720x576) to 320x240 or 400x240 (widescreen) at 960kb/s 15fps it looks fine when the video doubler scales it up - more than sufficient to watch a movie on the go.
