Have you also tryed wifi-radar? It uses it's own demon at startup so it runs fairly independent of the network-manager witch could also help for some things. It's also so far ben the most relyable and easy to use wierless manager that i've ben using.
The only problem i have had with it is that if their is a ton of wierless connections around it becomes a little laggy.
