Is it possible to get the source code for the small on-screen keyboard(maemo is open-source after all), tweak it, and then easily insert it in a existing os?

Some ideas what can be done:
1) There could be an option for the onscreen kbd not to appear when you tap in an edit box, and if you want the key board press the menu button (or a applet in the system tray). if you need the menu, it should be displayed a few seconds after you hold down the menu button.
2) Make a more finger friendly keyboard that doesn't occupy the whole screen.
3) Add a button to open fullscreen kbd.
What do you think, could it be done, or is it too much effort?
