I don't understand what it is you're saying.

What I did is:

Placed an 64x64 icon called 'gnome.png' in '/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/'.

Edited my gnome.desktop file to look like this (notice the Icon=gnome line).

Icon=gnome

Then ran:
