I have an old netgear ea-101 (only 10mb) - but it did the trick for me when the wifi in the hotel in london I recently stayed in was down.
Is there anything smaller, like am RJ45-to-MiniUSB nowadays?

As long as you can find the right kernel driver to load and support the chipset - go for it.
This implies that you have such a driver. Did you have to recompile your OS2006/7/8 to use the ea-101 or did it just work?
