Personally I think this is a bit of a liberty and sounds like someone trying to rip me off. Does this normally happen? Why do they need to know?

I'd call Nokia customer service as well, but when I ordered my 770, (mid Nov '05,) I got an email about 3 weeks later stating:

Dear Xxxxxx Xxxxxx

Thank you for your recent online purchase at NokiaUSA.com.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to complete your order# xxxxxxxx ,and ask that you please call the NokiaUSA Customer Care department at 1-888-256-2098 within 72 hours or your order will be canceled.

Once the information is corrected, we can process your order.
While the mail was from:

order-status@NokiaUSA.com

It went through servers including:

exfe1.pfsweb.com

So, it's entirely possible (very likely) that this is legitimate.

Also, a quick Google indicates that:

PFSweb, Inc. provides global outsourcing solutions to many of the world's leading brands. PFSweb offers complete BPO solutions as well as single Outsourcing ...

As well as:

PFSweb is the outsourcing partner supporting global brands like IBM, HP, Nokia, Raytheon Aircraft Company, CHiA'SSO, Smithsonian Business Ventures, Xerox, ...

Not to say that these web sites couldn't be phishing sites, but when combined with my previous experience, it would be unlikely.

I'd still call Nokia cusstomer service (get the phone number from the site you placed your order on).
