It s slow, it eats lots of memory, it does not automatically compute new route if you get far away from the planned one, it tends to give you route information a bit too late, audio is difficult to understand, but it s fun.

You consider cyborg, from xkcd? I've built some necessary gpsd stuff (gpspipe) and hacked it up to suit my taste better (results here); I've used it cycling, although more for fun on a route I already know than as an actual navigational aid...

(Edit: I do realize it doesn't do what you're doing, and I guess you're probably too far along for it to be of interest as a base; so consider it merely an interesting detail rather than a suggestion.)
