I'm surprised that anyone is surprised that these things sold so many. 3000 units isn't really all that many on a worldwide distribution, and with the internet hype we've seen. I assumed they would sell out in the first day easily... I thought the 3000 initial run had more to do with manufacturing capability than demand.
