The popular advice is to leave the N800 on all the time, because it consumes very little battery life when idle. However, sometimes a misbehaving program will keep it from idling fully and the battery will die in hours instead of days.

As for the "disconnect charger" message, ignore it. It only applies when the N800 is disconnected from the charger.

When disconnected from the N800, the charger still consumes a trivial amount of electricity. Nokia just wants to encourage you to reduce your electricity use.
