For local documents browsing you might like Liqbase. It is available in Extras.

For synchronisation of PIM there are open standards, but you'd also need a good PIM application which supports this as well as APIs such as Google Calendar API. There is no 'killer application' which does this right now. If you're interested in this, know that you're not the only one. I am interested as well, and would pay a developer who implements such killer application as bounty.

For 24/7 connectivity the 'N900' with Maemo 5 will include a HS*PA chipset.
