Ok, so I just did this test. I turned the volume down to zero and started a new song and it did the same thing where it sounded to max but, the volume was still at zero. I think there is a conflict between the two volume controls on the device, the button controls and the internal volume. I always keep the internal volume to max since they don't work with the buttons when I want to adjust the volume.
