Brendan,
I had this error when installing Carman. what I did was to ...
1) open a xterm window
2) log into root (you will need one of the root packages installed such as becomeroot, or root)
3) enter this command /etc/init.d/carmand stop
4) install carman again
This has worked a couple of times for me.
