I've never been able to nail down the "too many maps" issue, so I don't really know what the limit is or might be. I suspect it could depend on how many other applications are running and whether or not you have enabled swap.

As for the corrupt database, I'm not sure if there is anything you can do besides delete it and start again. Try Googling for "gdbm corrupt" though - maybe you'll find something.
