EDITx2: No need, its actually called hwa742 in the kernel config...
rc8-v2 is a n700_defconfig but if that doesn't work something is really broken for N770, as there are no WiFi drivers for that NIT anyway maybe we can try another kernels.

You could start compiling olders kernels (2.6.27, 2.6.26, ...) with the default config for N700 (n700_defconfig) until one works, you should apply to a stock kernel.org the corresponding OMAP patches.
