If you decide to go the route of a pocket amp, this one is only $8 (with free shipping) and I've found it works well. (The good is that it's small and does seem to improve sound quality, not just loudness. The bad is that there is no Off switch, you turn it off by pulling out the headphone cord. And I think it may slowly drain the battery when supposedly off.)
