Anything that keeps the cpu active (actually it's that and also anything that keeps timers active, which stops dyntick from slowing the tickrate right down, e.g. quite often the web browser) will quickly kill the battery (e.g. overnight), likewise with things that stop parts of the hardware from being shutdown (which was probably the case with your swap file).
