This sounds exactly like the gnome-keyring-daemon/nm-applet problem that I ran into with gnome. I have since quit using gnome, but it seems like my fix was to "right click" the background and a window would eventually pop up which would allow me to create a desktop icon to start gnome-system-monitor. Once I had started this, I simply took a look at whatever process was using the processor. This was usually gnome-keyring-daemon so I would have to kill that process...then gnome would proceed to start normally.

So, for anyone who wants to avoid these problems: DO NOT USE NM-APPLET or gnome-keyring-daemon will go crazy.
