Are you sure about this, or am I possibly running a different version of Easy Debian? On my n800, Easy Debian (and all that that implies) is running fullscreen inside a Maemo window. Have you tried the Home button? It should popup the Application Switcher while simultaneously showing you your Hildon desktop and thus the battery status. And then it's just one click to get back to LXDE.

You should only have to "logout" of LXDE if you are done with it. That's part of its beauty.
