Maemo IMHO is still the fastest OS on the tablets, I have used KDE and qole's easy Debian. For faster webbrowsing I use Tear which renders pages almost as fast as my P4 laptop.
An N810 should suit your needs especially if you need a pocketable device but you might be better off with a cheap 8.9 inch netbook.
