I got mouse and many other things to work following bman's previous thread (here) instructions, for earlier version of ubuntu. I chrooted to the ubuntu folder (with the instructions from this thread), and fixed fstab, did the apt-pinning thing, run apt-get update, and installed those packages listed in the post.

All of my desktop installations have died young so far. Currently I have base install, xfce4 (but no Xubuntu), custom .Xmodmap file based on the one in the other thread (link). Network did not work either, but perhaps you have better luck (easily fixed anyway, all components are there).

But now, pretty much everything works, and speed is very OK (considering RAM etc). I have had this for some time now (days!), and it is stable.

I guess, all components are there, just some installation script did not ever work for me.
