I made an attempt at the case "mutilation" for an N810. The N810 is a so-so fit. Theres extra space on either side of the tablet, and its just a little bit thicker than the N810.

You're right about the thickness, it took a while to cut through it. Cutting a big hole in the front seemed to make the case fit a little more loose, and since I cut low enough to remove the one magnet, right now its not a really safe choice for the tablet. If have some ideas to make the tablet fit a bit better, if they work, I'll post some pictures.
